Tackling the Rat Challenge: Introducing RatFix! in Pasir Ris West

Rats are an escalating concern not just in Singapore, but in urban centers worldwide. Here in Pasir Ris West, feedback from residents consistently highlighted rat sightings, prompting us to investigate the root causes of this persistent problem.
Our observations revealed two primary drivers behind the increase in rat populations: readily available food sources and ongoing construction activities. Food, naturally, acts as a powerful attractant, drawing rodents to areas where they can scavenge. Construction sites, with their ground disturbance and vibrations, often disrupt existing rat burrows, forcing these pests to relocate and seek new habitats within our community.
To address this challenge head-on, we collaborated closely with grassroots leaders, the National Environment Agency (NEA), the Housing & Development Board (HDB), the Town Council, and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). Together, we developed and launched a comprehensive 5-point strategy: RatFix!
The RatFix! 5-Point Strategy:
- Cut: Eliminating accessible food sources.
- Clear: Eradicating existing rat burrows.
- Cull: Implementing humane and effective rat control measures.
- Communicate: Educating residents and stakeholders on anti-rat strategies.
- Coordinate: Ensuring seamless collaboration among all parties involved.
We believe this structured approach can serve as a valuable template for other parts of Singapore facing similar rodent issues. A clean, pest-free neighborhood is a shared responsibility, requiring the active participation and joint effort of every resident. Let's work hand-in-hand to ensure Pasir Ris remains as rat-free as possible.
Our efforts at Pasir Ris West recently caught the attention of CNA's 'Talking Point,' who joined us to delve deeper into the rat problem and our ongoing initiatives. You can view Part 1 of their feature here: https://youtu.be/x0Y4Y73pJCw?si=a1iWfxK_2YJculBB.
